TIMELESS LANDSCAPE
Nazlı Pektaş
With the concept of “Axis of the Ground'', Enis Malik Duran talks about the traces left by power rather than power. It deepens the pit left by every source you can think of, such as towers/temples/churches/mosques/synagogues/mines/constructions built by governments. When we look at the Axis of the Earth from today’s perspective, it does not derive its meaning from the holiness of God; the sublime he created and the various structures built in his name. The pits deepened by the power of man, who derives his power not from the inclusive or divine as in the past; but from the depths of the earth, from nothingness, from darkness; and who also uses the divine power as he wishes, are the new Axis Mundi.

Enis Malik Duran’s exhibition at Art On, “The Axis of the Ground” looks at what remains of the collapse of the sacred under human domination, from ancient civilizations to the Anthropocene Age, while confronting the viewer with the limits of linear knowledge.

WHERE DOES THE GROUND'S AXIS SHIFT WHEN LOOKED FROM THE REVERSE?

Enis Malik Duran’s exhibition titled Axis of the Ground continues at Art On Istanbul until March 2. We spoke with the artist about the details of the exhibition, which offers an ironic look at the anthropocentric approach

INTERVIEW ON THE AXIS OF THE EARTH
Abdullah Ezik
“In a sense, the first line a person draws on a cave wall or the first moment they notch a horn, nature settles into a level of representation for them. Unlike all other living things, humans create a counter-nature.”
